FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Quick answers about housing applications, agency referrals, eligibility, program expectations, and donations.
Who can apply for housing with NWISLI?+
Adults 18 and older who can live independently or with minimal assistance and are willing to follow program rules. Priority populations include veterans, seniors, former foster youth, reentry participants, and adults experiencing housing instability across Northwest Indiana.
How do I apply?+
You can complete the housing application online, or a case manager or agency can submit an agency referral on your behalf. The application form and the referral form are linked from the Apply page and the homepage.
How is eligibility determined?+
Every applicant is reviewed individually. NWISLI evaluates housing need, income or zero-income certification, documentation, safety factors, and program fit. Eligibility is reviewed case by case rather than by a single checklist.
Is there a cost to apply?+
No. There is no application fee. Rent and program contributions, when applicable, are discussed during the placement process.
What documentation do I need?+
Common items include a photo ID, proof of income or benefits, and any supporting documentation related to your housing need. A zero-income certification form is available if applicable. Specific documentation needs are confirmed during intake.
How long is the wait?+
Wait times depend on bed availability, documentation completeness, and program fit. NWISLI is growing capacity across Northwest Indiana. Contact us directly for current availability.
What are the program expectations?+
Residents are expected to pay rent on time when applicable, maintain clean living areas, participate in housing stability meetings, respect fellow residents, follow property rules, report maintenance issues promptly, and work toward income, employment, education, or long-term housing stability.
What is not permitted in the program?+
Violence or threats, theft or property damage, weapons on the property, serious criminal activity, illegal drug activity on the property, and repeated lease or program violations are not permitted.
Is NWISLI a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization?+
Yes. Northwest Indiana Structured Living Initiative is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit organization. Donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. Donors should consult their tax advisor for guidance specific to their situation.
